Snails racing as big chill exposes job ahead

It’s pruning time in the vineyard, and the leaves have gone, exposing a view of the job ahead.Vines will be machine pruned and given a tidy up by hand later on.

There are also plenty of industry meetings on currently – with bugger all good news really.

Having plenty of grapes uncontracted, I’m already annoying wineries about marketing next year’s fruit because you really need to know where you (and they) are going.

There’s five or six tractors sitting in the shed, and every morning at 7am they all start saying “pick me, pick me”, but it’s only the one with the pruner on it for the time being. Another one will get a go soon for some weed spraying when I get time.

The Federal Government also is finally moving on taking more water away from Victorian irrigators.

Wouldn’t it be great if the government had the manly attire to face up to the minor parties instead of shooting off half-cocked and empowering the egos of the keyboard warriors into posting more and more misnomers of serious irrigator mismanagement on social media.

Also checked on how the spiders have been faring in the cold weather. They told me gloves don’t work well in their job, but I did notice they all had little beanies on – they even had MND on them.

Also the vineyard snails have heard on the grapevine that snails are somehow famous in France, and are excitingly conducting their trials for the 1m sprint for entry to the Olympic Games.

The snails are travelling from the different parts of the vineyard and ones from each area have their own prowess.

The snails from the Prosecco block are mostly lady snails and are often seen wearing stilettos, so hopefully they don’t trip.

But over in the Chardonnay blocks, the snails there are a pretty happy bunch and we expect them to be hard to beat – as long as they don’t wander from their running lane. The contestants from the Durif block known are for their big, ballsy character and may find chafing their biggest enemy on the long track.

My Dad would often say, while gently shaking his head: “Couple of people mentioned your report at bowls the other day, son”.

Missing you already, Dad: 24.9.1938-16.6.2024.
