Winegrowing group backs push to turn wine green

A PEEK winegrowing group has released a report seeking to make the industry greener.

Targeted at drinkers and sellers, the report also focuses on certification of wines by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.

A statement from the group said consumers were increasingly considering environmental impacts when choosing which drop to buy and a Sustainable Winegrowing Australia tick offered guidance on the issue.

“Despite challenging conditions facing the Australian wine industry, we’ve seen a really positive wave of progress within the sustainable winegrowing community, with many producers becoming certified for the first time,” said Australian Wine Research Institute’s general manager of industry development and support Dr Mardi Longbottom.

“In addition to members saying, ‘it’s the right thing to do’, momentum has been building due to retailers and hospitality venues globally asking for sustainability credentials or building select ranges or wine lists around sustainability.”
