Harvest all but wrapped up

THE harvesting of wine grape fruit to wineries is finished for 2024 and I have the last 50 tonnes of Lambrusco Maestri remaining, which will be harvested to the ground soon so the harvester can be cleaned up and put to bed for another season.

It’s not the only fruit we have put to ground – some have done a lot more and some less.

We can only hope that the most deserving and passionate growers can remain in the industry as we work through the solid oversupply situation.

And regardless of whether your year has been good, bad or indifferent, please keep talking to your mates.

It is so important.

I have been chasing weeds and applying nutrients to the vines through irrigation and a heap of compost will be applied shortly to keep the soil happy.

There is no further positive news on the wine job so I will mention one of groups I have had the pleasure of being involved in.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club at Lake Boga (Lakeside) proudly turns 100 this year, which is a great achievement.

And the club, quite rightly, will be celebrating the milestone over the coming months.

On a lighter note, one family which has been synonymous throughout all the 100 years at the Lakeside Golf course is the Crow family, the late Dunlop Crow having been a devoted winner/recipient of many golf balls, followed by his more recent family members, Wilson and Callaway Crow.

The Titleist Crows somehow suffered consistent bouts of lead poisoning in the ’90s, but many new family members of the Srixon Crow line are heavily involved, possibly due to the new GPS tracking equipment and non-optional attire including Kevlar undies.
