Cash to weed out pests

THE Victorian Government has opened up the next round of funding under the state’s Partnerships Against Pests grants program.

The effort makes grants of between $10,000 and $50,000 available so community groups can “build the skills and resources to manage invasive species in their area.”

Minister for Agriculture, Ros Spence, said there was $637,000 under the current round of funding and the program had seen good results.

“The Partnerships Against Pests grants show how local communities can lead the way in tackling weeds and pest animals at a grassroots level,” she said.

“Everyone has a role to play in protecting Victoria from biosecurity threats, and this program continues to invest in community-driven solutions that deliver long term benefits.”

One of those groups has been the Buloke & Northern Grampians Landcare Network, which $37,500 to raise awareness about weeds and pests in that region.

“Without funding through the Partnerships Against Pests program, we would not have been able to commence upskilling of our volunteers and regional land managers to combat invasive pests and weeds,” said Buloke and Northern Grampians Landcare Network facilitator Andrew Borg.

“The program has been invaluable for kickstarting our Pest and Weed management efforts and we’ll be keeping a close eye on future grant rounds for further opportunities.”
