Blooming great almonds for focus for festival

THE Mallee Almond Blossom Festival will return to Robinvale this month for the 15th time.

Organising committee deputy-chair Fiona Serong said the event is all about showcasing the area, as well as the almond growers within it.

“It’s that time of year,” she said. “Every blossom on a tree is an almond that’s going to grow, and they are just spectacular.”

The day will include bus tours out to local almond farms to see the blossoms, as well as live entertainment and food vendors.

Market stalls, including homemade items, and a big almond stall from a local grower will also be key parts of the festival.

Kids entertainment, including pony rides, jumping castles, laser tag, and face painting will be running on the day as well.

“It’s great for the community,” Ms Serong said.

“There isn’t always a lot to do out here, so it’s great to have something on to bring everyone together.”

A bake-off is being held as part of the activities for the first time this year, with conditions requiring homemade submissions that feature almonds in the cake, or as frosting or decoration.

Mildura’s Studio De Vin will also be hosting events in the morning and afternoon, offering two-hour paint and sip sessions where participants will be able to create and then take home an almond blossom painting.

“Almond trees in blossom are just spectacular,” Ms Serong said.

“We even have people coming from Melbourne just to see them.”

Applications for stalls, and the bake-off, as well as booking for bus tours are available on the Mallee Almond Blossom Festival website.

The event will be running from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, August 18 at the Robinvale Community Centre.
