Winter maintenance ready to begin on irrigation channels

Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) is set to begin its winter works program after closing the irrigation season on May 15.

The annual maintenance and capital program, held during the off-season until August 14, is planned to enhance the capacity of the channel systems supplying the irrigation network.

Total expenditure for the 2023 winter works program will be about $10 million.

Infrastructure delivery services general manager Warren Jose said it would be a busy period for GMW.

“The program is crucial to the business as the maintenance and repairs during this period have a significant impact on the irrigation season that follows,” Mr Jose said.

“In the coming weeks we will have more than 100 staff undertake various works, including channel bank and gate repairs, bridge works, desilting and weed treatment.”

To allow these works to occur, channels will be dewatered throughout GMW’s delivery network.

Customers have been advised to plan ahead and ensure, if needed, they have alternative arrangements for securing their water.

Mr Jose said people should also be mindful of changed traffic conditions during the winter program.

“There will be an increase of traffic on backroads as heavy vehicles and equipment access our channels and properties during the next three months so we ask people to take extra care on the roads,” he said.

GMW’s channels will be recharged and ready for the start of the 2023–24 irrigation season on August 15.
