Dry year so far as rain stays away

A HEAVY downpour in the middle of last month is the only rain of note to have fallen on Mildura this year, a fortnight from the start of winter.

And although that two-day soaking brought 20.4mm, which was 0.6mm above the average for April, the rest of the month brought only 2.6mm spread across five showery days.

Just 0.4mm had been recorded at the Mildura Airport gauge this month by Wednesday, May 17. The average fall for May in Mildura is 19.6mm.

March was also much dryer than the average. Only 7.3mm was recorded that month, against the average of 19.2mm.

No rain fell in February, and January’s 19.7mm was 3.3mm below the month’s average.

After weeks of blue skies, the Wednesday-morning Bureau of Meteorology forecast for the rest of the week says there is only a slight chance of some showers from Friday to Tuesday and that no significant falls are expected.

Fine, if sometimes cloudy, conditions and maximum temperatures in the mid-to-high teens are forecast throughout the same period and morning lows are expected to range from 3 degrees on Thursday up to 7 degrees on Sunday and Monday.
