Ouyen Sheep award winner

A RAM from Ouyen journeyed over 1000km and placed first at the Queensland State Sheep Show over the weekend.

The 2800 kilometre round trip to Charleville was worthwhile for the Tamaleuca Merino & Poll Merino Stud farm who ended up with the champion ram (Jimmy) and ewe (Sugar) at the event.

“Jimmy” the ram took out Supreme Exhibit, the highest honour at the show.

“We had an amazing show,” stud owner Kevin Crook said.

“(Jimmy) is big, he’s 160kg and he is only about 20 months old. For a ram of his age he is just a monster.

“He’s a medium-heavy cutter of pretty good wool, very good wool actually.

“He also loves to be patted … he’s just a gentle giant

Mr Crook said that while it was a successful show for himself, it was also good to show support to Queensland who consistently attend Victorian-based events.

“It was a worthwhile trip … lots of these guys make the trip to be closer to us so it’s only fair that we return the favour,” he said.

When asked to give an explanation on how the structure of the show worked, Mr Crook compared it to a sport that has wool on its ball.

“It’s almost like a tennis tournament,” he said.

“When you knock your opposition out, once they’re beaten they’re out for the tournament.

“Factors such as confirmation, structure, posture, wool quality, size, cut, etcetera, are all taken into consideration.”
