Fitting reward for hard-working club

HAVING the Mallee Machinery Field Days recognised as an award-winning event provided a “real buzz” for the Speed Lions Club.

But it also strengthened the resolve of members to not stop striving for their community.

The Speed Lions Club won the prestigious Awards Australia Community Group Award at the 2022 Victorian Community Achievement Awards, which was presented in Melbourne in November.

The club’s volunteer members were recognised for their commitment to raising much-needed funds for charitable causes and the local community through their signature agricultural event, the Mallee Machinery Field Days.

Club member and MMFD secretary Matt Brady said it was a great achievement for the small group.

“We were really proud to just be nominated for the award,” Mr Brady said, noting the win was unexpected.

“We’re a small but dedicated group and while we prefer our focus to be on the other charitable organisations and community groups we are able to assist as a result of the field days, it is nice to be recognised for our ongoing commitment to the event.”

The Community Achievement Awards started in 2002, and are designed to encourage, acknowledge and reward the valuable contributions that individuals, communities and businesses make throughout regional and rural Victoria.

The awards aim to recognise their success and achievements, which contribute to making regional Victoria a better place.

“There’s so many great groups out there doing wonderful things for their communities,” Mr Brady said, acknowledging they were up against some tough competition with finalists including Ballarat African Association, Bendigo FoodShare and Morwell Neighbourhood House.

Mr Brady said it was unfortunate the awards were held in November, peak harvest time for the Lions Club members.

“The majority of our members are farmers, so we didn’t have a huge representation at the award’s dinner,” Mr Brady said.

“Bringing the trophy home was a real buzz for our members and the wider community. It generated celebration amongst the Speed members, and well beyond, strengthening our resolve to provide community service in our area.”

Nominations for this year’s awards are now open and Mr Brady urged all community groups take up the opportunity to participate.

Details can be found via the Awards Australia website.
