Labour of love for craft exhibitor

SEWING has been a labour of love for Rachel Binney for most of her life.

She received her first sewing machine at the ripe age of 11, just as she was about to start high school.

“I’m a very hands-on person,” Ms Binney said.

“While I didn’t particularly like English or subjects like that, I was all for sewing, woodwork, engineering and cooking.”

Growing up as one of six children, Ms Binney enjoyed spending time in her dad’s automotive workshop, while also hand stitching, alongside her mum.

“I’m not a sit still and do nothing person,” Ms Binney said.

“I’ve got to be doing something, and I’ve been like this my whole life.”

Raising her own six children, five daughters and a son, Ms Binney didn’t have too much spare time on her hands.

However, it was an overseas holiday which saw her passion for sewing evolve from a hobby into a business.

“My husband and I went on a cruise and I loved it,” Ms Binney said.

“I loved the serenity of being on a boat and crocheting. I enjoyed the peace and quiet, while watching the world go by.”

Following that trip, Ms Binney decided she was hooked on cruising and needed to find a way to fund her cruise obsession.

With this in mind, Rachel’s Krafty Gifts became a reality.

“I started out with some heat packs and a few other things,” Ms Binney said, noting that was 10 years ago now.

Her domestic sewing machine was traded for a second-hand industrial one, her garage was transformed into her sewing room, she gained a strong social media following, attended markets, expanded her product range and saved for more cruises.

Having achieved what she set out to do, Ms Binney is set to embark on her 13th cruise in November.

She said she was lucky to be able to combine her love of sewing with her love of cruising.

“I just love sewing,” she said.

“It’s my happy place.”

Rachel’s Krafty Gifts will feature in the craft and interest tent at the Mallee Machinery Field Days for the first time this year.

Looking forward to the experience, Ms Binney said her stall would feature a range of handmade goodies, including aprons, bags, heat packs, ironing board covers and hand towels.

“I love the country vibe at these events,” Ms Binney said.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”
