Fox and wild dog bounty open

THE annual fox and wild dog bounty reopened this week.

Foxes and wild dogs are declared established pest animals in Victoria.

Their eradication from the state is not possible with available control tools and ongoing management is required by public and private landowners.

Hunting can play an important role in supporting an integrated management approach.

The bounty program rewards eligible applicants with a $10 bounty reward for each fox scalp, and $120 for each wild dog body part.

Dingoes are also often in areas inhabited by wild dogs. They appear morphologically similar to wild dogs and are extremely difficult to differentiate in the wild.

This means wild dog control programs have the potential to directly impact on dingoes. In Victoria, dingoes have been listed as threatened under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 and is protected on most areas of public land under the Wildlife Act 1975.

In the north-west of Victoria, the open season area stretches from the Victoria-SA border as far south as Warracknabeal, and along the Murray River to a midpoint between Mildura and Swan Hill.

Effective fox and wild dog management requires an integrated approach, using all suitable management tools including poison baiting, trapping, exclusion fencing, fumigation, canid pest ejectors and appropriate animal husbandry.
