Students mix with the best

BIRCHIP P-12 hospitality students have received recognition for their skills after showing they can mix it with the best in the culinary world.

Two new new food processors, valued at $500 were presented to the school by Birchip Cropping Group chief executive Fiona Best.

She said the gift, accepted by students Hannah and Ruby and teacher Kristy Knights, was a thank-you to the students for helping Stefano De Pieri prepare his paddock-to-plate inspired menu at BCG’s 30-year celebration dinner late last year.

“BCG is always looking for ways to support and work with our communities,” Fiona says.

“When the opportunity arose for a local group to work with renowned chef Stefano De Pieri at our anniversary dinner last year, we knew there would be a good fit with the aspiring hospitality students at Birchip P-12,” she says.

“The food service skills and professionalism shown by students at the event, particularly in a fast-paced environment, is a credit to them and the school.”

Fiona says the organisation will continue looking for, and offering opportunities to, students across the school.

Ms Knights says the appliances are an excellent addition to the school’s kitchen as they will provide students “as close an experience to a real restaurant kitchen as possible”.

She says having these machines brings them ever closer to that goal.

“Being offered the opportunity to assist in events such as BCG’s 30-year celebration is imperative in students developing well-rounded industry skills and experience as well as building confidence in the area of food service and preparation,” she added.

“We would like to thank BCG for the opportunity.”
